I love books. Ever since I read my first novel when I was in my first year of high school, I can’t get enough of books to read. All I’ve ever wanted to do was to get my book published. I read fiction especially suspense and action, I am not much of a romantic though I also like reading books by Danielle Steele. There was a stage in my life when I only read books by Harold Robbins, Frederick Forsyth, Robert Ludlum and Mario Puzo. These days I am more inclined to read books that are inspiring like Chicken Soup for The Soul.

When I search for books, the first thing that catches my eye is always the title. Even before I read the contents of the book, I will know if it is worth reading through its title. Who can miss books with titles such as Catch-22,Still Life With Woodpecker and Who Moved My Cheese?

Titles are really very important and I thought if I ever get my book published, I would choose a title which would pique the interest of the reading public so that they can’t help but buy a copy. Yes, like the majority of people, I also dream of becoming a great writer although I know my writing skills are limited to only a few hundred words of a very short story which fall very short of the thousands of words that a novel requires. This has been a dream I kept for as long as I can remember, and you know what? I have already been thinking about how much I would earn should my book become a bestseller.

Anyway, since I am interested in having a book published, I started reading on articles that might give me some insights on the process. It is advised that authors should trademark their book titles to make the most of the business that it would generate. Creating products that would carry the book title is a good business idea. It would not only advertise the book but would also generate additional income for the author.

I have learned that aside from the title, a good book cover is also essential to get my book published. Most publishing companies control book cover designs and the author does not have much say on it except if the author is an artist or thosewhose works involve visual fields.

It is important to be wary and scrutinize publishing contracts because there is a chance that the publisher instead of the author is given the right to choose the title of the book.Remember, you wrote the book so you should be the one to give it a title.

I think now I am ready to give a title to the book which I want to publish, the only catch is that I am still in the first few pages of the draft and I am already stuck. I have already run out of things to write! Guess you will have to wait a while longer to grab a copy of my book then, if I ever get to finish it at all.

I always thought that the length of a book is based on the number of words that it has but then I learned that it is actually based on the number of pages that the book has. This has something to do with the readers’ expectations that the price of the book should be based on its number of pages, the thicker the book the more expensive it should be.

For me, the value of a book depends on its content, not on its length. A short book which can give me the entertainment and satisfaction that I am looking for is better than a long one which would afterwards leave me feeling that I have paid for something not worth reading at all. A writer would often ask, how long should my book be if I ever get my book published?

A lot of distinguished writers are at odds at determining the value of their written works depending on the length. Orwell and Hemingway both support the minimalist argument believing that great writers often write in concise, tight prose. Proust on the other hand, as evidenced by his Remembrance of Things Past, belongs to the group of writers who believe that for a book to be useful and entertaining it needs to have more pages to read.

But it all really depends on the kind of book that you write. If it is meant for educational and inspirational purposes and you need to be very specific and explain a lot of things, then you should write it with as many pages as needed. After all, the number of pages in a book can be made less or more by changing the font, margin and spacing of the pages.

Oftentimes, in a writer’s desire for a longer book, the outcome would become less than acceptable because of unnecessary words that are included in the book. Should I get my book published, I would choose to write a short but entertaining story because for me content is more important than length. But then I might write a long one if my mind is so full of ideas that it is necessary to put them all on paper.

Anyway, different writers have different styles and it is up to the individual to choose how to write his story as long as he can effectively convey whatever it is that he wants his readers to read and learn.

The first advice given was to have my work ready which I have already done, the manuscript is done and I already have several copies made should any of the publishers I approach ask for one. Next is if my book is about a specific topic, I need to find publishing houses that cater to this genre. I have already listed several children’s book publishers since my book’s target readers are children.

I think I have done everything right, the manuscript is written double spaced on white bond paper and everything is perfect. Although some publishers may accept manuscripts sent through email, it is still best to send a hard copy through the mail. Most of them don’t usually return manuscripts so you don’t have to send a self addressed stamped envelope with the package.

After sending your manuscript, be prepared to wait a few months before you will get any response from the publishers and it’s not always a positive response so you need to be ready to accept it if your work is rejected but never be discouraged because one publisher might not like your work but there is also a chance that another will like it. To get my book published, I always approach or contact as many publishers as possible to give me more chances.

About two years ago, I had one demand in life. Just one. I wanted to get my book published pronto. I had been working on it for the better part of the last decade, reworking it and tweaking it, and it was finally done.

The only thought I had in my head was that I simply had to get my book published. It wasn’t that I was impatient or impractical, I had just poured so much of my time into the project that I had to get it published soon.

Unfortunately, I didn’t spend too much time looking for publishers. Even if I had spent the time, I don’t know that they’d be willing to work with me. In fact, from what I’ve found, it’s usually difficult for any publishing house to print an unknown author’s work. Unlike the big name people out there, I didn’t have the contact information of anyone of importance, so I decided to go the self-publishing route.

I have to admit. I was surprised at the simplicity and speed of self-publishing. Sure, there are advantages to courting a publisher, gaining their attention and then having them publish a book; but it was a fairly long, tedious process… Not something I was interested in when I was looking to get my book published.

The publish on demand shop I chose was LuLu.com. LuLu has surprisingly low rates and incredible access to databases like Amazon’s and Borders. What they means is they can release your book to those retail businesses so they can order it and put it on their shelves.

From what I understand, your book has to be rather in demand for that to happen though. It’s not like you can publish a book and magically have it show up all over the country!

The really amazing thing is that your book shows up on their website to buy! So you can send a simple Amazon link to your friends to have them purchase your work.

Another nice thing to do is make sure that there’s a link on your Facebook profile or Twitter page linking to the place your book is for sale. You’d be surprised how many poeple buy you work from that simple thing alone. And it’s really easy to do in the social media spaces that are out there.

The best experience I had after I had been looking to get my book published was when I received my copy in the mail. Lulu lets you receive a copy before anyone else so you can proofread it and make sure it’s up to your standards. Then, after you sign off on it, it’s available to either the general public or you can keep it private for friends and family.

Either way, the decision to get my book published has been one of the most rewarding of my life. If you are looking into getting a book published, make sure you stay true to the idea. You won’t ever regret the work it takes to make the dream happen!
